I have tried many different kinds of tactics and tools that supposedly get the job done in terms of increasing or improving web site traffic.

Also, another important reason why so many marketers like article marketing as a method of improving the amount of internet traffic that they receive is because article marketing does not cost you any money. True, you have time invested, but outside of that there are not any costs associated with the writing or distribution of articles.

In certain circles out there on the internet, cheap and/or no cost marketing is termed as a ?bum marketing tactic?. Bum marketing tactics are any method of marketing that is dirt cheap or free that if consistently and persistently applied can produce an income on the internet.

In addition, Google loves you all the more for it and considers that information that you have for the alt tag as very important when generating search returns.

Another critical step in the optimization of your website is to insure that you use your main keywords sparingly through out your website, but don?t over do it. You may want to Consider using your main keyword roughly 1 time per 150 words to be on the safe side of Google and not be seen as spam content.

When you edit your keywords into your content be sure that you occasionally bold, underline and italicize them as to place an emphasis on them, which is another positive for getting some brownie points with Google.

The reader is to keep in mind this is only a partial break down of some of the main On-page Optimizations that you can do to make your website more attractive to the powerful and ever growing Google search engines.

And the best part is, you only pay when someone clicks on your link. The other plus here is you’ll know if your ad is working by watching what percentage of those who see your ad actually click on it. And if its not working as well as you’d like, you can easily change it.

Google offers excellent tracking reports so you know exactly how many people saw your ad and how many clicked on it. You can send them to any page on your web site (for example, you might want to send them directly to your products page, or the page where they can register for your free ezine or special report).

Once you start looking at server stats, you need to determine your conversion ratio. The conversion ratio is the number of sales you get per visitor to the site. Importantly, it is not the number of sales per hit. A visitor may generate multiple hits, so just focus on visitor statistics. Some stats programs refer to visitors as ?sessions.? Regardless, conversion ratios vary by product or service. Some may be as low as 1 in 25 visitors while others will be much higher. If you convert at anything over 1 in 500, the site probably needs some serious tweaks unless you are in an extremely competitive or general market.

Making your convert is all about providing a convenient solution for your prospects. You should review your site from this perspective. Is it easy to find and buy a product or do you have to click through four or five pages? Make it as simple as possible.

Advertising links can cause poor sales. Many people make the mistake of having their advertising link to their home page. If your advertising refers to a specific service or product on your site, the advertising should click through directly to that page. Never make your prospects hunt for what they are looking for on the site. Many of them will not do it.

As strange as it may sound, the load time of your site can kill your sales. Remember, 40 percent of Internet users are still on dial-up modems. While your site might load quickly when you look at it on your cable, T1 or DSL connection, how does it do on a 56k modem? Don?t guess. Go find one and try to load your site. If you have a lot of graphics, you are going to be in for a shock!

Even if your site loads quickly, most ecommerce sites have time glitches on the order page. This glitch occurs when the customer fills out the order information and clicks the processing button. Sites can grind to a halt as they convert to the secure credit card processing system. This is such a prevalent problem that a majority of ecommerce sites will lose up to 40 percent of their sales on the order page. Make sure your site loads quickly, particularly the order page.

Its one thing to learn from others who have been there and another to outright copy their work. The search engines are very smart and usually detect page duplication. They may even prevent you from ever being listed by them.

4. Using keywords that are not related to your website.
Many unethical website owners try to gain search engine visibility by using keywords that have nothing at all to do with their website. They place unrelated keywords in a page (such as “sex”, the name of a known celebrity, the hot search topic of the day, etc.) inside a meta tag for a page. The keyword doesn’t have anything to do with the page topic. However, since the keyword is popular, they think this will boost their visibility. This technique is considered spam by the search engines and may cause the page (or sometimes the whole site) to be removed from the search engine listing.

5. Keyword stuffing.
Somewhat like keyword stacking listed above, this means to assign multiple keywords to the description of a graphic or layer that appears on your website by using the “alt=” HTML parameter. If the search engines find that this text does not really describe the graphic or layer it will be considered spam.

6. Relying on hidden text.
You might be inclined to think that if you cannot see it, it doesn’t hurt. Wrong…. Do not try to hide your keywords or keyword phrases by making them invisible. For example, some unethical designers my set the keywords to the same color as the background of the web page; thereby, making it invisible.

7. Relying on tiny text.
This is another version of the item above (relying on hidden text). Do not try to hide your keywords or keyword phrases by making them tiny. Setting the text size of the keywords so small that it can barely be seen does this.

8. Assuming all search engines are the same.
Many people assume that each search engine plays by the same rules. This is not so. Each has their own rule base and is subject to change anytime they so desire. Make it a point to learn what each major search engine requires for high visibility.

9. Using free web hosting.
Do not use free web hosting if you are really serious about increasing site web traffic via search engine visibility. Many times the search engines will eliminate content from these free hosts.

10. Forgetting to check for missing web page elements.
Make sure to check every page in your website for completeness, like missing links, graphics, etc. There are sites on the web that will do this for free.

This is just a few of the methods and techniques that you should avoid. Do not give in to the temptation that these methods will work for you. They will do more harm than good for your website.

Not only will you spend weeks of wasted effort, you may have your site banned from the search engines forever. Invest a little time to learn the proper techniques for increasing search engine visibility and your net web traffic will increase.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 2: Titles
It is common opinion among SEO professionals that the Title of a webpage is THE single most important SEO aspect of a webpage. The title of the webpage is the first thing a search engine views and tries to interpret. It is vital to ensure that the title is unique across your whole website and that it is highly related and relevant to the content of the webpage. We like to use between 4-10 words in the title tag and we always use the leftward rule. Leftward rule is where the most important words are closer to the left. In this case, the most highly searched on terms we identified in SEO technique 1.

Search Engine Optimization Technique 3: Duplicating Web Page Content
Often websites reproduce information that is copied from other websites. This is a very bad thing to do and search engines are so smart now that they check to duplicated content both within the same website and across all websites pages within their index. It is very important to ensure your website has unique content across the whole Internet. You can write unique articles or howto’s or you can find someone who will write unique content for you. If you currently find that a lot of your pages are listed in the supplemental index on Google then making sure the titles, descriptions, meta keywords and all of your on page content is unique is how you would pull them out of the supplemental index.

5. Hold a Contest: Use your website’s auto responder as a means to hold a contest of some type. For example, if they sign up for your newsletter, they get a chance to win free e-books

6. Press Releases: This is one of the most overlooked ways to increase website traffic. The subject can be as simple as announcing a new product that you offer, or a new hire that you’ve made. As long as it’s newsworthy, you can distribute your press release to the online press release companies and have it picked up by the major search engine’s news categories (for example, Yahoo! News). 7. Affiliate Program: Do you sell a product or e-book? Then you need to create an affiliate program. This is how it works: you offer to permit sale of your product on other Internet owners’ websites, in exchange for giving them a portion of the sale (say, 35%). Do you realize how many websites that you can have your products on using this method? There are many Internet business owners that simply sell other people’s products (we call these Super Affiliates). This way, you sell more products and increase website traffic absolutely free of cost! You do have to promote your affiliate program and product, which brings us to the next method, which is….

8. Get A ClickBank Account: Clickbank is the largest product directory on the Internet today. Additionally, Clickbank will set up and manage your affiliate program for you. They will also manage sales and any returns. You don’t do a thing! Both your product and affiliate program are listed in the Clickbank directory. People looking for the product you offer find your website and wham! You’ve just taken a major step toward getting an immediate increase in website traffic! And, it only takes 5 minutes to sign up!

9. Joint Venture: You can team up with a company that sells similar or complementary products and services. Your website link is then advertised on that company’s site and vice versa. This results in directing traffic from their site to yours. All you have to do is contact the company that you are interested in via email, with a proposal. This technique works amazingly well. You increase website traffic, and most importantly, it is both relevant and targeted, increasing your ability to make a sale!

10. Use Ebay: Stop passing up Ebay! Ebay is less intimidating than it looks, and it is easy for beginners to get started. In fact, Ebay was practically made for the Internet business owner who wants to increase website traffic. You can set up an Ebay store, of course linking back to your website. 1. Your e-mail signature – Most, if not all of today’s email programs will let you add a “signature”, that is, a few lines that get attached to each of your outgoing messages.Don’t just plop down your name and phone number like most people – add an offer that makes your recipient want to click!

For example, instead of having your e-mail signature read:

John Doe

Doe Agency Real Estate

Create a more interesting signature that makes someone want to click – such as:

When you add an offer in your email signature, your reader will often click on it out of curiosity to read more.This is a free, simple way to get people to your website.

2.  Spread the word in forums – Like e-mail, most forums and message boards allow you to have a signature line at the bottom of each post.Many people use these to post quotes, cute sayings and other fun or interesting stuff – but again, you can use this to post an offer, a discount or a free sample.

Depending on the rules of the rules of the message boards, you may only have a few lines to use for your offer.Take advantage of this even in a small space that will intrigue your reader, like:

With just two simple lines, you’ll be able to garner interest and clicks to your website with every forum post you make.

3. Writing reviews – This tactic is also free, and works best for companies selling a tangible product, or a service company that works with these products (such as a web design agency using different software products).   There are plenty of “review sites” out there that welcome user opinions of different products ranging from clothes to electronics to food.   Register at places like Amazon and Epinions to make your opinion count while getting some valuable traffic to your own site.

Obviously, you shouldn’t try to sell your product or service in the review itself, but you can let people know what you do without a sales pitch.  For example:

I show the XQ800 Fusion Power Generator to customers at my electronics store all the time.  They love the fact that it needs no recharging, doesn’t skyrocket the electric bill and is virtually maintenance-free.  I sell them on my website at 20% less than retail stores – so they’re always flying off the shelves.

4.Writing articles – just like this! It’s free, takes little time (especially once you’ve been writing for awhile), and just like with e-mails and forum posts, you get a resource box at the bottom that you can link to your website with.

Articles should generally be around 400 words (about a page and a half in Microsoft Word) to be accepted by the majority of article directories.  Above all, make sure you have something interesting, unique or helpful to share — no one wants to waste time reading a sales pitch or some vague tips that don’t have examples to share.

Plus, with article writing – not only does it get easier the more you do it, but your articles are also picked up by other sites that syndicate them across the web, meaning greater (free) exposure for you!
